my first ever ‘word of the year’

Well here goes nothing- my first ever word of the year! Over the course of the last year, and now at the beginning of this year, I have seen so many people talk about having a ‘word of the year’, so I figured it was time for me to pick a word myself!

Before last year, I had never really heard too much about picking a ‘word of the year’ and frankly, didn’t understand it. I thought picking a word for the year was a resolution in disguise, and if you read my last blog post, then you know how I feel about those (spoiler alert: we’re not the best of friends). It wasn’t until I discovered my blog mentor, Blair, that I really understood what picking a word of the year was all about. Blair documented her 2017 word of the year by uploading videos to her YouTube Channel every month- updating everyone on how her word of the year, rooted, played out over the course of that month. From the way I saw it, a word of the year was more of a guiding principle- just like the way I apply the 10 principles of Intuitive Eating to my daily life, I could apply my word of the year the same way. It was music to my ears.

To be honest, I’m not really sure what I’m supposed to be doing here, so this is going to be a learning experience for both me and you! I don’t know If I’m going to do monthly blog, Instagram, or Facebook update- all I know is that I’ve picked my word. I’m going to let the word play out and see what happens! If you have any suggestions or would like to see some kind of “update” on my word of the year, let me know here!

Ok….now to the moment you’ve all been waiting for.

Drum roll please!

My 2018 word of the year is…

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

{embrace}

The word ’embrace’, to me, fits into a lot of facets.

embrace myself.

embrace recovery.

embrace my future.

embrace God’s plan.

embrace the dark.

embrace the light.

embrace love.

embrace the positive.

embrace the negative.

embrace those who are hurting.

embrace those who are healing.

embrace those who are celebrating.

embrace everything that comes my way with open, non-judgmental, and compassionate arms.

I can’t tell you how I happened upon embrace, but I can tell you that the second it popped into my brain I couldn’t get it out of my head. In a way, I think this is God’s way of telling me that I’m ready to accept myself, accept others, and accept the world around me.

2017 brought me lots of emotions- both positive and not so positive. I experienced a lot. I saw a lot. I felt a lot. I lost a lot. I gained a lot. Now it’s time for me to embrace those feelings, people, and situations.

Who’s ready to embrace along with me this year? because I know I sure am!

That’s all she wrote…

    1. Thanks so much for reading, Jamie! 🙂 I’m so glad to hear you’ve decided to pick a word too! I can’t wait to see which word you pick! <3

  2. Yes! Awesome! I love doing words of the year, because – exactly like you said – I view them as a way to guide my decision-making, rather than a goal/resolution I need to complete!

I LOVE “Embrace” – such a good one!

    1. Thanks so much for reading, Grady! 🙂 Yes! That’s why I love it already, because it’s not a goal haha I’m not a huge fan of quantifying things, so a word of the year is perfect for me!

  3. I’m loving the word of the year theme. My 2017 was all about “Receptivity” and learning to accept that things were coming to me and for me. 2018’s word is Savor and all about hanging on to those precious moments and lessons! Savoring what I put in my mind, body, and spirit!

    1. Thank you so much, Alley! 🙂 I LOVE both your word from last year and this year! What wonderful choices!
